The aroma of freshly baked bread usually perked Elias up, but today, even the most comforting scent failed to lift his spirits. He sat in his small kitchen, staring at his half-eaten breakfast. The morning light seemed too harsh, the silence in his apartment too complete.

He checked his email. A fan had sent him a picture of a tattoo. It was a perfect copy of his portrait of a woman, now permanently inked on someone’s shoulder. Elias felt a coldness wash over him, as if something vital had been drained from his soul.

He pushed his plate away, the food suddenly unappealing. He wandered to his window and stared at the park across the street. Even the vibrant green of the trees seemed subdued. The world felt muted, lacking in color.
