The dusty attic held more than just forgotten treasures; it contained echoes of a past Daniel wished he could rewrite. He found himself wandering up there after seeing another drawing from his nephew, Alex. The recurring character, a creature with shimmering wings and a voice like tinkling bells, was the same companion Daniel had invented to chase away the nightmares of his youth. The sight of it brought a tightening to his chest, like a cold hand squeezing his heart.

He ran his fingers over the faded fabric of an old teddy bear, the fur matted and worn. The bear had been "Pip" in his childhood fantasy world. Now, he wondered if it was Pip who was sending Alex the creature, or if Pip was just as lost in memory as Daniel.

He felt the prickle of tears behind his eyes, a sensation he hadn't experienced in years. The attic felt heavy, suffocating. He turned away, needing air.
