He swore he could feel the vibrations through the floorboards. The incessant drilling was a constant reminder. Leo had meant to get out of bed earlier, but his limbs felt leaden, his motivation nonexistent. He sat on the edge, head in his hands.

The sunlight crept through the gaps in the blinds, painting stripes across his dusty room. He'd lost track of the days, each one blurring into the next. He looked outside at the house next door, at the fresh lumber and the man humming as he worked. Why did it seem so easy for everyone else?

He sighed, the air catching in his throat. He poured himself a glass of water, the ice clinking loudly in the otherwise silent house. He wanted to scream.
