The bell above the door of the pawn shop jingled, a sound that usually sparked some excitement, but not today. Sarah trudged inside, the ache in her heart a constant companion, especially after their latest argument. The world seemed to have lost its colors.

She was drawn to the back of the shop, where a small collection of jewelry lay. A small velvet box. Inside, was a ring. She recognized the unusual setting, the intricate details, the way the light played off the tiny rubies. It was the ring her grandmother had worn every day of her life.

She picked it up, her hand trembling. The air seemed to thicken around her, a suffocating embrace of memories and regret. A lump formed in her throat.
