The small, cluttered space of his childhood room felt like a monument to a past he couldn’t recapture. He picked up an old comic book, the pages brittle with age. He flipped through it, but the bright colors and fantastical stories held no appeal. He felt a detachment, as if he were observing his own life from a great distance.

His phone buzzed. A text message from a friend. He considered responding, then quickly shut off his phone. The thought of engaging felt too strenuous.
