"Another delay?" she asked the airline representative, her voice flat. He was offering her a voucher for food. The funeral. Her mother. She should be there, comforting her siblings, sharing stories, mourning. Instead, she was stranded, a prisoner of circumstance. The terminal was a kaleidoscope of bustling travelers, but she felt utterly alone. She felt a coldness creeping into her bones, a stillness that made it hard to breathe. She accepted the voucher mechanically, then walked away with her head down.
