The fluorescent lights of the professor's office hummed, a jarring counterpoint to the silence that had settled over Clara. It was a silence filled with unspoken judgments, with the weight of the accusation hanging in the air. Her fingers fidgeted, picking at a loose thread on her jeans. The room seemed cold, despite the closed window.

She found herself staring at the framed diplomas on the wall, each one a testament to years of dedicated effort. Now, her own academic journey was threatened. A lump formed in her throat, making it difficult to speak. She felt like a small boat lost at sea, tossed about by a storm she couldn't control.

“I…I don’t understand,” she finally managed, her voice barely a whisper. The professor’s expression remained neutral, impassive. The words echoed in the sterile room, hollow and meaningless. All the meticulous planning, all the late nights, all the dreams she'd nurtured – were they all just a sham?

Outside, the late afternoon sun cast long shadows across the campus. She wished she could be anywhere else, doing anything else. She wanted this whole ordeal to simply vanish.
