The air in the lab was stagnant, the familiar scent of chemicals now stale and unpleasant. Dr. Anya Sharma, the guiding spirit, had gone. Just a short email saying that her time was up. The announcement was so impersonal. Sam felt the absence acutely, a dull ache behind his eyes. He wandered from bench to bench, not knowing what to do.

He picked up a beaker, his hand unsteady. The equations on the whiteboard seemed meaningless, the experiments pointless.
