"I just... I don't get it," Clara mumbled, staring at the ceiling. The apartment felt cold, even with the heater cranked up. She was sitting on her sofa, surrounded by scattered applications and notes. The job at the museum had been her dream. Emily, her friend and competitor, had already told Clara that she was the one.

She pulled the blanket tighter around her. The weight of the world felt heavy on her shoulders. She should be happy for Emily, she knew she should. But all she could feel was this hollow ache.

She thought about getting up, doing something, anything. But the thought seemed too exhausting. The world outside felt distant, blurry, and uninviting. The phone buzzed - she didn't bother checking it.
