Gemotions

The scent of stale coffee hung in the air, a familiar aroma that usually comforted David, but today it only deepened the shadows. He hadn't slept well, tossing and turning, haunted by the whispers he'd overheard. Sarah, his wife, had been on the phone again last night, her voice a soft, almost clandestine murmur. He’d pretended to be asleep, but the knot in his stomach only tightened with each word he couldn't decipher.


He pushed away his untouched breakfast, the toast growing cold on the plate. He felt a profound weariness, a sluggishness that weighed down his limbs. He thought about calling in sick to work, just to escape the day's obligations, the pretense of normalcy. But the thought of staying home, of stewing in the silence, was even less appealing.


He watched Sarah as she prepared to leave for work, her movements precise and efficient, her smile bright. He wanted to ask, to confront, to understand. But the words felt lodged in his throat, choked by an invisible fear. He forced a smile of his own, masking the heavy weight that pressed down on him.
