The aroma of freshly brewed coffee usually soothed him, but today it only accentuated the bitterness. Mark sat at the kitchen table, the newspaper unread in front of him. He’d heard the phone calls, the whispers, the hushed tones. His wife, Susan, had become a stranger, her affections suddenly remote, the warmth gone.


He felt a deep sense of vulnerability, a profound sense of loss, even though he didn't know what he had lost. The silence between them had become a palpable thing, a heavy weight that pressed down on him.


He looked out the window, the morning light seemed too bright, too harsh. He wanted to shout, to scream, to break the silence. He drank the coffee, but it didn't help. The bitter taste remained, lingering on his tongue like a constant reminder of what he suspected.
