The vibrant leaves of the maple tree above the driveway seemed to mock him with their cheerful brilliance. He’d woken with a vague sense of unease, a feeling that something was amiss. Now, looking at the empty space where his classic Porsche had been parked, the feeling solidified into a concrete block of despair.

He felt adrift, untethered. He ran his hand over his face, as if trying to wipe away the fog that clouded his thoughts. The world seemed distant, unreal. He wanted to curl up somewhere and disappear.
