The low hum of the fluorescent lights in the library seemed to amplify the silence. Sarah sat surrounded by books, their colorful spines a vibrant contrast to the grayness that had enveloped her. She kept staring at the open pages of an old photo album.

She was waiting for David. They were supposed to go through their old photos. She’d pulled them out in preparation. He always had a different perspective on their shared past. She suspected he would arrive and laugh at the seriousness with which she recalled their first date.

She felt the dull ache in her temples intensify. She was certain his version would be brighter, more cheerful. The thought made her want to just go home and curl up in bed.
