The salty air whipped at her face as she stood on the pier. The relentless crashing of the waves seemed to mirror the turmoil inside. She clasped her hands, feeling the cold seep in.

She was waiting for Jake. They were supposed to revisit the beach where they’d had their first kiss. She knew, with a certainty that settled in her stomach, that he’d remember it as a day of joyous discovery.
