He sat slumped in the worn armchair, the afternoon light fading to a dull grey. The house felt empty, echoing with the silence that had become a constant companion. His mother’s scent, a subtle blend of lavender and old books, still lingered faintly in the air. He hadn't known what to do with himself since… since she'd been gone.

He pulled open the bottom drawer of his mother's desk, the familiar oak wood cool against his fingertips. There it was: a cardboard box labeled "Christopher's School Days." A lump formed in his throat as he lifted the lid. Inside, every drawing, every spelling test, every painstakingly crafted diorama from his childhood was meticulously preserved.

A drawing of a rocket ship, scrawled in crayon, brought a wistful smile to his lips. He remembered the pride he’d felt, the joy of creating something. Now, all he felt was an overwhelming sense of loss, a yearning for the simple days of childhood. He gently replaced the lid, the weight of the past settling heavily on his shoulders.
