The late afternoon sun cast long shadows across the living room. James sat on the floor, surrounded by a mountain of papers. He’d found them in the attic, carefully organized and meticulously labeled. His mother’s handwriting, so neat and precise, adorned each file.

He picked up a book report on *Moby Dick*, his own name staring back at him from the cover. He remembered struggling with the book, the long words, the complex themes. A faint smile touched his lips as he recalled the frustration and, eventually, the satisfaction of finishing it.

But the smile quickly faded. He realized it wasn’t joy he was feeling, but the echo of a forgotten life. He felt a deep longing for a connection he could no longer have, a past that was irretrievably lost. He leaned back against the wall, the weight of the past pressing against him.
