“It’s just… it’s not what I wanted,” Liam muttered, staring at the swirling foam in his latte. The cafe buzzed with the chatter of other students, but it all seemed distant, muffled. He’d poured his entire heart and soul into making the debate team. He’d envisioned the prestige, the intellectual challenge, the feeling of belonging.

He picked at the foam with his spoon, the perfect, creamy texture now irritating. His apartment, once a place of excitement, now loomed in his mind as a prison.

He thought of his rivals, and the thought was not tinged with anger, but with a strange, dull ache. He wished things were different.
