The dust motes danced in the shafts of sunlight that pierced the curtains. Sarah watched them, mesmerized, a slow, deep breath escaping her lips. A notification chimed. She knew before she saw it what it was. Her heart sank a little. The request. From "Jessica Bell."

The girl who'd stolen her best friend and made her life a misery in middle school. The recollection sparked a burning shame. It’s hard to remember your own mistakes when you're busy recalling those of others. Her palms grew damp. She was aware of the space around her, and of how small she felt in it. Was this a sick joke? She felt fragile, like a glass statue.

She let the phone slide to the floor.
