Sunlight streamed through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air, a fact that normally would have pleased Chef Anya. Today, however, it only served to highlight the emptiness in the dining room. She pushed a stray strand of hair behind her ear, a habit she'd never needed before. The critic's pronouncements echoed in her mind: "Lacking finesse," "Uninspired." She leaned against the counter, the cool marble doing nothing to soothe the tremor in her hands. The vibrant energy she had always brought to her dishes was gone, replaced by a deep-seated weariness.
