The drive to “Sweet Surrender” had felt like a slow death march. John felt his spirit sinking with every mile. The idea that he'd never again enjoy one of their rich desserts felt like a personal offense.

He sat alone in his usual booth, the vibrant colors of the decor now seeming almost garish. He ordered his favorite, the chocolate lava cake, the anticipation he usually had was completely gone.

The dessert arrived, perfectly presented, but he stared at it without enthusiasm. He took a bite, the rich sweetness failing to register. The familiar comfort of the familiar space was now just a bitter reminder of what was being lost.
