He had been avoiding his mailbox for days. The weight of unanswered emails and forgotten obligations had settled upon him. The card, propped up against a pile of circulars, caught his eye. He ran his hand through his hair, a gesture of exhaustion. He turned the card over, searching for a return address, a familiar name. Nothing.

He felt a pull in the pit of his stomach. A familiar feeling of disconnect. He walked back inside, the card discarded on the counter. The apartment felt too big, the air too thick. The television flickered in the corner, broadcasting a world of laughter and celebration that he couldn't access.
