Gemotions

The attic air hung thick and stale, scented with mothballs and forgotten dreams. Sarah pulled a tattered trunk from beneath a layer of cobwebs, a task that felt like wading through mud. The dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight piercing the gloom. She hadn't wanted to come; the inheritance had felt like a summons, a duty she couldn't shirk.

She found a box of old photographs, each image a tiny stab to her side. There was her grandmother, young and radiant, holding a baby Sarah. Another showed her with her deceased grandfather. Memories, once vibrant, now felt faded, like the sepia tones of the pictures themselves. She closed the box with a soft thud, a tremor running through her.

Her brother, Ben, called up the stairs, his voice buoyant. “Found some old records! Wanna hear some?" Sarah remained silent, the offer sounding utterly alien in her ears. She felt a profound weariness, a longing for something she couldn't name. Dusting off the trunk again, she felt the weight of it all pressing down.
