The email notification popped up, its arrival heralded by a cheerful chime. David almost deleted it without a second glance. The subject line, however, caught his eye: "Northwood High Reunion." He felt a pang, an unfamiliar pressure in his temples.

He leaned back in his chair, the office around him a sterile landscape of beige and fluorescent lights. Everything felt so… predictable. He stared out the window, at the city sprawling before him, a city that had promised so much and delivered… well, a lot less.

He sighed. He felt a deep sense of separation from things.

He deleted the email. It felt easier that way.
