The silence of the room amplified the hollow ache in his chest. Ethan saw his journal open on the desk. His roommate, Chris, was out playing video games, the rhythmic clicks and bangs from his door often echoing in the hall. Ethan felt like he had been robbed of something precious.

He walked over to the desk, his legs heavy. He picked up the journal, the weight of the book feeling unbearable.

He didn't bother to close it. He stared at the page, the words suddenly alien. He felt the insidious drip of disappointment into his very soul. He sat on his bed, the springs groaning beneath him, and stared out the window.
