“I don’t understand why you have to sell it, Dad,” he said, his voice quiet. He stared at his father’s old fishing rod, propped up against the fireplace. His father, usually jovial, just shrugged.

The room felt stuffy. The fire, which had always brought a sense of warmth to the space, seemed to offer little comfort. He felt a deep sense of resignation, as if a vital piece of his childhood was being chipped away.
