The sunlight streamed into Liam’s apartment, but he was unable to appreciate it. He hadn't bothered to open the blinds, and the sun seemed to press against the glass like a curious child. The email arrived: rejection. Again. He felt the familiar pull of the earth, dragging him downwards. He felt a profound sense of disconnect.

A knock echoed through the room. A package. *For someone else, of course,* he thought, almost amused at the irony. Addressed to "Ms. Evelyn Reed." The old tenant. He stared at it, the cardboard box like a brick in his hands. He'd never met her, but the thought of the memories that must have accumulated within the walls made him feel a kind of sadness.

He set the box on the floor, the tape still sealed. He considered the possibilities - what she might have ordered, what she might have been hoping for. She had moved out, perhaps to somewhere new, perhaps not. It was just a package, he reminded himself, just an object. Still, he couldn’t bring himself to move it.
