The air in the apartment felt thick, stagnant, as if it had been holding its breath for far too long. A heavy lethargy had settled over him. He found himself unable to focus, unable to care. He stared at the ceiling, the same pattern of cracks and imperfections he had been staring at for weeks.

A package arrived. He barely registered the thud on the floor. "For: Daniel Carter." The name of the man who had lived here before him. He’d seen the pictures - a vibrant, smiling man. It was like another world.

He didn't bother to pick it up, just let it sit there, a mute testament to a life he couldn’t relate to. The package seemed a mockery of his own inertness. It was a reminder of time passing. The days would continue, and he was stuck here.
