Rain lashed against the windows of the small apartment, mirroring the drumming in Fiona’s head. Her revolutionary composting toilet design, a marvel of sustainability and efficiency, was crushed. A company had filed a patent a month prior; the details were eerily similar. She sat hunched on the sofa, clutching a lukewarm cup of chamomile tea. The room felt stifling, the air thick with disappointment.

She barely touched the tea, the warmth doing nothing to ease the chill that seemed to have settled in her bones. The vibrant green of her failed prototype, a small, hopeful testament to her efforts, sat gathering dust in the corner. He glanced at it, and then away. It hurt to look at it.
