Rain lashed against the window of the campus library, mirroring the rhythmic drumming in Leo’s chest. He stared at the pages of his textbook, the words blurring, the sentences losing all meaning. He hadn't touched the book in over an hour. The email was still fresh in his mind, the university's terse notification, the quiet admission of a mistake. The scholarship, the lifeline, wasn't his. He felt hollow, a vast emptiness expanding within him.

He pushed back from the table, the scrape of the chair echoing in the otherwise silent room. His legs felt heavy, as though weighted down by invisible chains. He slowly gathered his things, his movements leaden. The thought of going back to the cramped, shared apartment, of facing the looming bills, made his stomach twist.

Outside, the grayness of the day seemed to seep into his very bones. The vibrant campus, usually bustling with life, appeared muted, drained of color. He wanted to disappear, to simply melt away into the shadows.
