The room was buzzing, a hive of laughter and well wishes for his mother. Michael stood near the buffet, picking at a miniature quiche. He wasn’t hungry. He hadn't been hungry for days.

He watched her, a picture of grace in a tailored suit, accepting hugs and congratulations. He knew this day was coming, but he still wasn't prepared. He took a sip of water, the coldness doing nothing to soothe the tightness in his throat.

He remembered her, always at the kitchen table, working late, making sure they had everything. Now, she would have time. Time for what?

He was supposed to be the one giving the speech, but his younger brother had volunteered at the last moment. He was relieved, but also ashamed of his feelings. He just couldn't bring himself to talk about her achievements. His mind felt like a stagnant pool. He simply nodded and smiled as his brother spoke.
