The vibrant colors of the decorations seemed garish to Leo. He leaned against a wall, observing the scene. He felt a deep, slow burn inside, something akin to a phantom ache.

His mother, dressed in a sparkling gown, was the center of attention. She deserved it. He knew that. He saw the joy on her face, the genuine affection in her eyes. But he felt a pang of something more profound.
