David rubbed his temples. The air conditioning had failed, and the heat was making him sluggish. He hadn't slept well last night. Or the night before. Or the night before that. He felt a profound sense of weariness, a deep-seated exhaustion that went beyond mere physical fatigue. He kept seeing his ex-wife's face. The way she had smiled at him, and the way she had looked at him before they broke up.

“This is just great,” Sarah, his coworker, sighed. Her voice was sharp, but even that failed to pierce through the fog of his mood.

He nodded, unable to muster the energy for a proper response. The walls seemed to be closing in, the metal box shrinking with every passing minute. He just wanted to be alone, to disappear into the quiet darkness of his own mind.
