The stale air and the cramped space made Susan feel even more trapped. The walls seemed to be closing in, suffocating her. She had been avoiding her family all week, unable to face the disappointment in their eyes. The weight on her shoulders was heavier than the lift itself. The silence was deafening. She felt the tears welling up.

Her coworker, Tom, was on his phone, trying to get a signal. He had been unusually quiet. She had thought they were friends. Now she wasn't so sure.

"I can't get any service," Tom finally said, looking defeated.

Susan nodded, unable to speak. The world felt grey, the future uncertain, and she was alone.
