The news felt unreal. Dr. Rossi, gone. Across the hall, whispers were circulating about her replacement. Another advisor. Another set of expectations. For David, a sense of loss was heavy in his chest.

He wandered into the campus chapel. The silence, usually a balm, felt like a judgment. He sat in a pew, the wooden surface cold beneath his hands.

He'd spent so long working on his project with Rossi. All their planning now felt like it meant nothing.
