The elevator ascended slowly, each floor a fresh wave of anticipation that crashed against Ben's already fractured resolve. He felt a distinct lack of appetite, which was highly unusual for him. He usually loved a good lunch.

The office doors slid open, revealing Mark, already with a triumphant grin plastered across his face. "Hey Ben!" Mark said cheerfully. Ben mustered a weak smile.

He forced himself to walk past Mark's open office door, hearing the enthusiastic chatter of his new team. The weight on his shoulders felt almost unbearable. The sunshine streaming through the windows seemed mocking, a reminder of the brightness that would never be his.
