He stared out at the city lights, a glittering tapestry that mocked his plight. The eviction notice, creased and crumpled, sat on the small table beside him. A knot had formed in his stomach, a persistent tightness that he couldn’t seem to loosen. The city, usually a source of energy, now seemed to press in on him, suffocating him.

The silence of the apartment was a constant companion, broken only by the hum of the refrigerator. He thought about the books piled haphazardly on the floor, the faded photographs on the walls, each a fragment of a life he was losing. A sigh escaped him, a sound filled with the exhaustion of a marathon runner.

He reached for a cigarette, though he hadn't smoked in months. The nicotine did little to calm the tremor in his hands. He felt a profound sense of isolation, adrift in a sea of his own making. The future felt like a vast, empty canvas.
