The crash had startled him awake. David, still half-asleep, had wandered to the window and seen it. He hadn't felt much when he saw it, only a certain flatness. Now, staring at the debris, a wave of… something washed over him. He felt hollow, like a shell.

He noticed the light reflecting off the chrome of the chainsaw that the neighbor had brought out. The saw’s whine grated on his nerves, yet he found himself staring transfixed.

The broken branches looked like broken promises. He was sure the birds would never come back.

He’d forgotten to eat breakfast. He just wasn’t hungry.
