The hum of the fluorescent lights in the office building seemed to amplify the silence inside Eve’s head. She stared at the calendar, a stark reminder of the passing days, each one blurring into the next. She’d been feeling this way for weeks, maybe months. Lost.

Her friend, Chloe, had told her about a mutual acquaintance, and in the story mentioned Brad. He was a therapist. Eve felt a jolt of shock, followed by a sinking sensation in her chest. Brad. The bully from the art club. She remembered the way he'd laugh, the way he'd sneer.

The thought of confiding in him, of revealing her insecurities, was utterly impossible. The idea was absurd. It was like offering a wounded bird to a predator. She wanted to scream.
