Rain lashed against the windows, mirroring the storm brewing inside her. Sarah had practically begged her to come, insisting it would be good for her. Lila, trapped in the corner of the reception, regretted not being able to say no. Across the dance floor, she could see him – Mark’s best man, the man who’d walked out on her.

She excused herself from the chatty bridesmaids and headed toward the buffet table, suddenly ravenous. She piled her plate with food, but found she couldn't eat. The food sat cold and untouched.

The knot in her stomach tightened further when she saw him approaching. He smiled, a polite, empty gesture. "Lila, you look..."

"Tired," she interrupted, her voice flat. She could feel her cheeks flush.
