Sophie stood at the window, the city lights blurring through her tears. The music from the party below drifted up, each laugh, each conversation, a sharp stab. She’d been so happy, so proud of Ben, until she walked in on him in the living room the other night, conversing in fluent Italian with her brother.

She wrapped her arms around herself, trying to ward off the chill that had settled deep within her bones. He had promised her forever. Now he was shutting her out.

The ache in her heart was a physical weight. The joyful anticipation she felt before had evaporated, replaced by a hollow sensation. She felt a sharp, sudden pain as she thought of all the time spent together in silence.
