He slammed the door, the sound echoing through the sterile apartment. It was Friday, and the weight of the week settled heavily on his shoulders. The job was a constant drain, the bills piled up, and the prospect of another lonely weekend stretched before him like a desert.

He rummaged through the clutter in the hallway closet, looking for something, anything, to distract him. He unearthed a box, forgotten in the dim recesses. It was his father's, and marked with a faded “Memories.”

Inside, a faded photograph of a younger man, his father, grinning widely. He had never seen that expression before. Beneath the photo, a single sheet of paper. His father's letter of resignation from a prestigious law firm. He scanned the document, the words hitting him with a punch to the gut. It spoke of a betrayal, a loss of integrity, a soul-crushing disappointment.

He dropped the letter, the paper falling silently onto the floor. His father, the man he'd always known as stoic and impenetrable, felt the same way he did now. He looked at the cracked ceiling.
