"A sister," I whispered, the word tasting like ashes in my mouth. My apartment, usually a sanctuary, now felt like a prison. The silence was deafening, broken only by the frantic beat of my own heart. The news had dropped on me, right after the break up.

I wandered aimlessly through the rooms, touching objects that once held meaning, now imbued with a sense of emptiness. The photographs on the wall seemed to mock me with their cheerful smiles. I felt a profound sense of incompleteness, as though a vital piece of my life had been stolen.

I sank onto the bed, the covers twisted and tangled. The weight of the news was crushing, and I felt paralyzed by the overwhelming uncertainty of it all.
