It was the sight of the giant dumpster in the driveway that did it. John, whose blood pressure was already a concern, felt a sudden, unpleasant heat creep up his neck. His carefully manicured lawn, the symbol of his hard work, was now marred by this industrial monstrosity.

He spent the rest of the day in a state of agitated restlessness. He couldn’t focus on anything. He jumped at every bang and saw. He even yelled at the television during the news.

That evening, he considered calling the city. He thought better of it, deciding to go sit at his kitchen table and just stare at a bowl of fruit.
