He tried to act casual, but his hands wouldn’t stop shaking as he navigated the narrow hallway. Mark hadn't realized how *small* the house was until he was trying to squeeze past his father, who was holding a tray of appetizers. They were for his welcome back party.

His father, bless his heart, had gone all out. Balloons, streamers, the works. His friends from high school, now with families and careers, were milling about, offering awkward hugs and sympathetic smiles. The thought of facing them made his stomach clench.
