He felt his cheeks flush. This was the pinnacle of indignity. The new guy, a smug-looking fellow with a perfectly knotted tie, was already better at the job than he was. He could see it in the way the new guy typed, the confident way he answered the phone, the easy rapport he seemed to have with everyone. “Alright, so let’s troubleshoot this again,” the new guy said, gesturing to the complex software. His predecessor, who was currently the one meant to be training him, could barely meet his gaze. A bead of sweat trickled down his temple. He wished the floor would open up and swallow him whole.
