Eliza gripped her clutch so tightly her knuckles whitened. The wedding felt like a pressure cooker, each guest a potential hazard. And then she saw him. Her stomach lurched. She attempted a breezy wave, but it felt more like a frantic twitch.

He started walking towards her, and she suddenly became obsessed with the pattern on the tablecloth. She pretended to be intensely interested in it, tracing the embroidery with her fingertip. "Oh, isn't that… intricate?" she said to the person next to her, her voice a shaky whisper. She wished the floor would swallow her whole.
