The gala was in full swing, and Lisa was making polite conversation with a group of strangers. She spotted the “Chief Technology Officer” of her friend, Karen’s, company. A few weeks ago, Karen had boasted about getting a promotion, but Lisa noticed him looking at her with a confused expression as she approached. As the man turned away, his expression turned to shock. He seemed to recognize her.

Lisa felt the blood drain from her face. She felt a sudden, suffocating tightness in her chest. She excused herself, muttering something about needing air, and fled the opulent ballroom. She wanted to disappear, to vanish into thin air. She felt like she was trapped in a nightmare.
