The soft glow of the phone illuminated the empty bedroom. Michael had gone to the gym. She saw the calls. Three missed calls from "Chris." That wasn't anyone she knew. Her fingers traced the screen, her breath hitching in her throat. Her mind raced, conjuring images she didn't want to see, constructing narratives she couldn't escape.

A hot flush spread across her face. She felt a burning sensation in her chest. She stood there, completely paralyzed, unable to move or think, the phone a heavy weight in her hands. The air in the room felt thick and suffocating.
