The empty gazebo cast a long, lonely shadow. He clutched the crumpled invitation, the words "Surprise Engagement Party" now mocking him. Mark’s fiancee had called to say she needed some time alone. The party was off.

His legs felt like lead. He’d envisioned the scene: the happy couple, the cheers, the joyous celebrations. Now, he was alone, surrounded by the remnants of his failed attempt at happiness. His throat constricted, and he felt a burning sensation in his eyes. He wanted to disappear.
