Mark felt the blood drain from his face as he read the generic birthday wishes. His hands started to feel clammy, and a cold sweat broke out across his brow. He didn’t know who would send him a card without signing it. Was this a prank? A passive-aggressive slight?

He slammed the door of his apartment a little harder than needed, and it reverberated loudly. He tossed the card onto the table. He was jumpy, irritable. He kept flinching at every little noise.

He wanted to scream. He was so incredibly irritated by this trivial, meaningless gesture. He paced his apartment, his steps heavy and frustrated. He felt the phantom itch of an impending argument.
